Saleh Abbas did not realize how important it was to be proficient in English until his first day as a technician at BAPCO. Considering the company’s strong reliance on English, he initially feared that his weakness might affect his career, until he realized BAPCO’s strategic association with the British Council.
The collaboration between the two entities was of great benefit to employees. Staff who desire to strengthen their English can attend classes directly on-site at BAPCO. Employees are welcome to register for classes provided by a full-time, British Council certified instructor, conveniently before or after regular working hours. Upon realizing this fruitful opportunity, Abbas signed up his first year at BAPCO and has remained steadfast in his goals to learn English. This is evident in his career progression since he began as a technician, then promoted to senior technician, and now proudly holds the title of maintenance supervisor.
“I was so excited to discover that BAPCO offers English courses directly from the British Council,” says Abbas. “It was such a convenient way for me to learn and work in one opportune location. Over time, my confidence in English began to grow, and I began to further develop my abilities and explore my growing opportunities.”
Since his confidence has increased in English, Abbas has begun to work on improving his skill set by way of involvement in Toastmasters International, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills.
Abbas has also taken advantage of his new skills for personal accomplishments. No longer limited by language barriers, Abbas has started traveling around Europe.
