Cloud Computing Comes to Oman via SAP

Awasr, an Omani leading Internet provider and SAP officially teamed up to start providing cloud computing services to the Sultanate. The Minister of Transport and Communications HE Dr Ahmed Al Futaisi, announced the deal at the SAP Forum Oman.

The introduction of the cloud services would increase the economic growth and boost the competitiveness. In addition to that, it would also allow local companies to adopt real-time analytics for their better decision making processes. The Knowledge Oasis Muscat, the existing data center meets all the requirements by SAP. However, if needed, the Sultanate may set up its own data center, said Al Futaisi, the COO of Awasr.

Tayfun Topkoc, Managing Director of SAP UAE and Oman, commented the partnership would also affect the local startup ecosystem. The SAP Training and Development Insitute also announced the SAP’s Young Professional Program to start in Muscat. During the three-month program, the young people will go through SAP software functional and technical training. They will also improve their soft skills. At the end of the course, the successful graduates become SAP Associate Consultants and can enter the job market.

That is not the first initiative of the tech giant in Oman. Earlier this year, SAP launched the SMB Clinic where more than 40 entrepreneurs meet up to exchange knowledge and information. In the coming months, it would expand to Soha, Duqm, and Salalah. Local bright minds can also benefit from the SAP’s global Startup Focus Program, focused on technology entrepreneurs who have ideas on Big Data and real-time analytics solutions. SAP also boosts the innovation and creativity in the MENA region through its WINovate program.
