This follows the major acquisition in 2017 of Souq.com by Amazon which was rumored all the way back in 2016. Amazon is speculated to have paid between $650 million and $750 million in its acquisition of Souq.com. The e-commerce platform, co-founded by Ronaldo Mouchawar, generates about 78% of the e-commerce traffic in the MENA region and has about 25 million visits on a monthly basis. The acquisition of Souq.com enabled Amazon to extend its reach into several GCC countries including the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar.

Furthermore, the online retail giant has recently launched Amazon Global Store in Saudi Arabia, which now enables customers in Saudi Arabia to buy over one million global products directly from the U.S’s Amazon, including apparels, handbags, shoes, kitchenware, household items and more.

What do you think? Amazon UAE, real or wishful thinking?
