For about a week now, there has been some rumors and speculations about the acquisition of GitHub by Microsoft – Well yesterday it was confirmed. GitHub, a web-based code sharing, and collaboration service just got acquired by Microsoft for $7.5 billion. It’s interesting to note that the platform raised $350 million between 2012 and 2015, and was valued at about $2 billion in 2015.
Former CEO of Xamarin, Nat Friedman, who’s now Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President, will be GitHub’s new CEO. On the other hand, Chris Wanstrath, the founder and former CEO of GitHub, will become a Microsoft technical fellow who will be working on strategic software initiatives.
According to a Microsoft spokesperson: “GitHub will retain its developer-first ethos and will operate independently to provide an open platform for all developers in all industries.”
