Many have accused millennial of being “wanterpreneur”, the idea of wanting to be entrepreneurs because it’s a “thing”, with much talk and little action. Is there any truth to that accusation in your opinion?

I don’t like the term “wantrepreneur” because it often has a derogatory connotation. I think every successful entrepreneur started off as a “wannabe” and then succeeded. Calling someone a wantrepreneur is simply a way of telling them that they will be unsuccessful, and that is not anybody’s call to make.

People are allowed to dream and discuss their future plans, and they should be encouraged until they decide whether or not they are ready to make a very big, life-changing decision.

Accusing the millennials to be the only wantrepreneurs is unfair, it exists in all generations. Is it a bad thing?

I don’t think so, I think its a by-product of all the success stories and people seeing their peers start businesses, become successful and wanting only the success part without the hard work and frustration the precedes said success.

Who are we to say who is wantrepreneur and who is a real entrepreneur? I think that entrepreneur can become business owners, business owners can become an entrepreneur, and it is all a journey.

I say hats off to anyone who wants to start solo and start a project on their own, it takes guts and courage to start up and take a risk. It is a hell of a lot of work and responsibility.

Do wantrepreneurs exist? Yes. There are many different types, and I’ll describe a person I’d met just a few days ago.

Me: So what are you working on these days? Her: We just did a complete redesign of the app! I can’t wait to show it to you. Me: Oh. Why? Her: The old version was too clunky and didn’t really capture the simplicity and elegance we were going for. Me: How did that customer meeting go .. the last one you had? Her: Oh we didn’t do that. Wanted to wait for this new update to go out before the meeting.

It’s been almost 2 years since she started work on this app. Still no customers, and tens of thousands of dollars spent in development cost.

100% True, its the latest buzzword, 10 years ago everyone in this region wanted to work in real estate and before that everyone wanted to become a banker, and now everyone wants to be an entrepreneur.

Its natural, the market determines who is the “real deal” and who’s not then corrects itself.
